Workshop Description
Explore a brand new medium with toting comfort! In this workshop, you will experiment with crochet, embroidery, bead embroidery, fabric paint, and more to create your own tote bags. You will learn about the work of artists Billie Zangewa and Prisma Andrade. You will be able to experiment with different fabric processes and create imagery and patterns to express how you find comfort in daily life. A tote bag can be an expressive outlet while still being very practical. Most of us find comfort in different forms of fiber because of its association with warmth, memory, and creativity. Explore the magic of fiber with Toting Comfort!
Rationale
Rationale for Lesson Plan and Co-Teaching Workshop: "Toting Comfort"
The "Toting Comfort" workshop was designed to introduce students to fiber arts as a meaningful, accessible, and expressive medium. By combining crochet, embroidery, beadwork, and fabric paint, the lesson plan offers a multidisciplinary approach that fosters creativity, tactile engagement, and emotional reflection. The choice to center the project on tote bags serves both a functional and symbolic purpose: students create a usable item while embedding personal narratives into their designs.
The workshop also highlights contemporary fiber artists Billie Zangewa and Prisma Andrade, whose work explores identity, care, and the domestic sphere through fabric and stitching. These artists serve as both inspiration and cultural context, enabling students to see how fiber art can engage with complex themes such as memory, selfhood, and comfort. In this way, the workshop connects art-making to lived experience, encouraging students to reflect on what brings them comfort in their daily lives.
Co-teaching this workshop allows for rich collaboration, differentiated instruction, and modeling of creative risk-taking. It enables us to meet diverse learner needs by offering multiple modes of engagement and expression. Through shared facilitation, students benefit from varied perspectives, scaffolding, and encouragement as they explore an unfamiliar medium. The lesson aligns with inclusive, student-centered pedagogy that values emotional connection, material exploration, and cultural relevance.

Unit Plan
Description
This unit invites students to explore emotional storytelling through tactile materials. Over five weeks, students will engage with punch needle, needle felting, quilting, embroidery, and mixed media to create artworks rooted in personal and cultural ideas of comfort. Through hands-on projects, artist studies, and reflective practices, students will develop technical skills while using fiber arts to express memory, identity, and care.
Rationale
As I prepare for student teaching, developing a comprehensive unit plan demonstrates my ability to design thoughtful, standards-aligned instruction that supports diverse learners. The fiber arts unit showcases my commitment to culturally responsive teaching, hands-on learning, and fostering student voice through material exploration. Including this plan in my portfolio highlights both my readiness to lead a classroom and my intentional approach to curriculum development.
